Most household cleansers are alkaline and bleach-based. Bar Keeper's Friend is different, most of our formulas contain oxalic acidic, a naturally occurring ingredient found in leafy green vegetables like, rhubarb, which makes it significantly more effective at tackling rust, mineral deposits, and tough stains that bleach-based products simply can't touch. It's also bleach-free and contains no caustic ingredients, making it safer for the surfaces you use every day. In fact, most stainless steel manufacturers specifically recommend acidic cleansers over bleach-based ones.

Yes, when used as directed, our BKF Powder Cleanser is safe for food preparation and serving surfaces and carries an NSF registration, meaning it meets the standards used in professional commercial kitchens. BKF is bleach-free. We do recommend wearing gloves for prolonged use, especially when tackling the fun restoration projects. It's simple: wet the surface, apply a small amount of BKF, scrub with a damp cloth or sponge, and rinse thoroughly. One important tip, don't leave it on for more than one minute, especially on metal surfaces. A little goes a long way! For tougher messes, our Powder Cleanser lets you control the strength by adjusting how much powder you mix with water. More powder = more power.
